## Bristol Balloon Fiesta Maths.

I was alerted to this video by Mr Drew on Twitter. It shows in stop motion hot air balloons being inflated ready for flight. The video has no sound which makes it even better. Some of the things you could do are:

Predictions: Which balloon do you think will inflate first / second/ third

Will the first balloon inflated also be the first to take off?

Ordering: Which balloon inflated first/second/third/fourth and so on.

Shape, pattern and symmetry: What shapes can you see? are any of the balloons symmetrical? Can you see any patterns to the balloon designs?

Sorting: Using the picture below can you sort the balloons into different categories.

Counting: Count the balloons as they take off.

Cross Curricular Links: In Literacy you could write a story of being on a balloon and the journey that you take. Poetry to describe your journey, how it feels and what you see.

Geography: Draw a birds eye view from your balloon.

D and T: Design a hot air balloon.

Science: How do the hot air balloons float? Design and make your own balloon, can you make it fly?

Music: Create music to go with this film clip.

## The Fallen: Lest We Forget.

Thanks to @FarrowMr for showing me this poignant video about D-Day. Two artists Andy Moss and Jamie Wardley set about making a tribute to the 9000 soldiers that fell during the D-day landings. More can be read here: http://thefallen9000.info/

The video below shows some great pictures of the soldiers etched in the sand:

Maths links could be:

Estimation - Stop the video at any time and estimate how many soldiers you can see?

Time - If each etching took 5 minutes, how long in total was needed to do 9000?

If there were 200 volunteers how long would it take them?

How about 500 volunteers?

Due to the tide if you only had a 12 hour gap to create how long would you have to create each etching

Measuring - If each soldier measured 1.5 metres, how much beach would be needed to create the tribute?

Shape, can you see any symmetry or symmetrical patterns with the etchings?

## Some Great Resources for Upper KS2

Was trawling the internet when I found this little gem, its an e-book full of maths activities, now like any of these things it has good and bad activities, but I feel the good far outweighs the bad. The 188 page PDF, can be downloaded from here:

## The Time You Have - In Jellybeans.

you may have seen this but if not please take a look. It is quite a poignant video that takes the average number of days that each person lives and shows these as jellybeans. The beans are taken away to show how long we spend doing everyday things and how many beans we have left at the end. What would you do?

It asks at the end what would you do if you just had 1 jellybean (day) left to live. A good look at number but also good for thinking skills, it would be interesting to hear what answers your children would come up with to the one jellybean question.
