Mental Calculations Shed

Chris Moyles Maths Quiz - Various Artists

For anybody that hasn't seen this show before, Chris Moyles has a section where famous pop acts of the time, come on and sing a maths problem. This would be great as a starter and should be a great hook.
It would be advisable to play it a couple of times, and ask children to write the problem on a whiteboard, or as we do in our school notebooks (the old fashion paper ones not touch screen computers i'm afraid).

Just be careful because the answer is revealed at the end of some of them!
I've used these in class (Y6) and they absolutely love them. As mentioned above, I allow the children to just watch it once and try to do it mentally, the 2nd time they have to write it down. Then they have 2 minutes to work out the answer. We also had a go at writing our own maths songs based on these. The children loved doing this, I'm sure your kids would love it too! They performed them for each other and then the other groups had to work out the answer - a great set of mental maths lessons. (@shaunh0pper - Primary maths specialist teacher, Sheffield)

Arthur Benjamin: A Performance of 'Mathemagic'.

In a lively show, mathemagician Arthur Benjamin races a team of calculators to figure out 3-digit squares, solves another massive mental equation and guesses a few birthdays. How does he do it? He’ll tell you.

Using daring displays of algorithmic trickery, lightning calculator and number wizard Arthur Benjamin mesmerizes audiences with mathematical mystery and beauty.

This video is excellent and shows the power of the mind. The video can be stopped at various points and the problems can be solved by your students mentally or with calculators.
