Children need a hook to get them interested in a subject and maths is no different. Children love computer games and films so if you could hook children using this medium and help children to learn then why not use it. This shed will be full of maths resources and videos linked with popular culture.

Mr Men and Maths.
The Mr Men are an old favourite of mine, but with their varied shapes, they lend themselves well to maths. The video above is a simple animation looking at the properties of different shaped Mr Men.
The picture above would be good to look at:
Shape: what shapes can you see amongst the Mr Men.
Number:How many (put colour here) Mr Men can you see?
How many Mr Men with hats can you find?
Critical thinking:Which Mr Man would be the best at (you could put anything here, good for critical thinking skills)
examples would be: maths, literacy, sports, singing, making you laugh, solving problems, cooking, building a house...the possibilities are endless.
Thanks to Mrs Fleetham @thinkingclassrm for this idea
Look at sets, what different sets can you put the Mr Men in?
Shape, size, colour, hair, hats, noses, shoes
Which Mr Men would work best as a team and why?
If you had to choose 3 qualities from 3 Mr Men, what would you choose and why?

I love this photo, it shows how recognisable the Mr Men are. It could be printed off and children could use the shapes to create there own Mr Men. You could ask which Mr Men they represent. Talk about the shapes and properties of the shape. Below are various resources which may help with maths and the Mr Men.

Angry Birds Maths in Practise: Thanks to Becca Paddock
Following the creation of the 'Popular Culture Shed'. the tweeting community came out in support of the shed saying how important computer games etc are to spark learning. Better than that tweeter Rebecca Paddock @beccapaddock
told me that she had already used 'Angry Birds' to teach Maths (and Literacy). Bravely she has chosen to share her work with us, even allowing us to use and download her plans. Thank you Becca, your children are very lucky.
Using 'Angry Birds' to Help Teach Maths.
The topic was run over a week as I wanted something that was self-contained as it was end of term and I was out for a few days so needed something engaging for supply cover.
The topic was started as the children entered the classroom to a giant Angry Birds set (made from large wooden blocks and large stuffed Angry Birds toys). For the moment they entered there was a buzz from everyone, especially boys! Lots of questions about what we were going to be doing and why they were there! The maths started by the children playing the Angry Birds game on individual whiteboards to create a high score. They then used the digits from the high score to practise adding small amounts, using jottings to support their working out (LA use Numicon to support this). The classroom was silent but you could still feel the children fully engaged and buzzing with what they were doing. They then went on to look at 3d shape nets and used these to build characters, which then led on to them designing and making their own. They revised 3d shapes and looked at new vocabulary. The week finished with a practical game of Angry birds using wooden blocks to build their own playgrounds, adding the scores of knocked down bricks. In literacy we looked at character types within Angry birds and related this to good and bad characters we already knew. They explored using verbs and adverbs to add detail to their writing and wrote character profiles of their chosen characters. My Year 2 children thoroughly enjoyed the week and learnt loads, I think the most memorable part of the week was when a Y6 walked into the classroom and saw the display “Wow that’s not fair! How do you get learning out of Angry Birds?” Later that day the same Y6 child was in their class talking about the amazing learning Y2 were doing!

Angry Birds - An Introduction to 2D and 3D Shape.
Having more boys than girls in my class means I am bombarded with the latest trends and Angry Birds is very popular at the moment, so why not use that popularity to help make maths exciting.
In the video above, introduce 2D shape and ask children to write on whiteboards or in jotters any shapes that they can see. Share their finds and talk about the properties of the shape. Begin to look at 3D shape and how these can be made up of 2D shapes.

Watch the above video and ask the children to look for 3D shapes, and especially their properties.
Their are several activities you can do from here, you could record the different shapes and their properties, draw them from different views or even make 3D shape angry birds using this link.

Angry Bird Multiplication.
Angry Bird Counting.
After the mind stretching video about parabolas, we now have a couple of videos for younger children, multiplication and counting.
