In 2011, The National Children's Bureau (The NCB) carried out some research on the National Schools Top Trumps Tournament and found that Top Trumps does help children improve their basic numeracy and literacy, as well as help them gain and deepen their knowledge on the subject matter covered in the pack. Everybody loves Top Trumps. They're fast-paced, super competitive, and easy for anyone to pick up and enjoy. They're also a great tool for teaching and learning; whether it's teaching kids the size of jungle predators or opening a discussion on the 1936 Olympic Games, we know that kids love to learn heaps of amazing facts and stats through Top Trumps Here I will add as many as I can find from various sources.

Differentiated Top Trumps Maths Challenges.
Thanks to my mate Gaz Needle @gazneedle for sharing this with us. He is going to use it in his lesson observation which I am sure will be brilliant. Using the Top Trump packs pictured on the left of the sheet, children choose which level of challenge they want to answer and have a go at answering it.

Fiona says "As part of studying the novel, students need to analyse who is the weakest character one lesson, and in another who holds the most power. I thought it may be ‘fun’ to turn into a top trumps as students will see different things. Rather than running over same ground, we can focus on writing.
The top trumps also makes the lesson cross-curricular with regards numeracy!"
What is great is although these are themed for 'Of Mice and Men' they could be used with any book, for younger children you could look at the Gruffalo and have less criteria.

You could look at the animals in the wood such as the fox and say are they important to the plot? You could substitute for another woodland creature but would they want to eat the mouse? If you chose a jungle animal the setting would then change. We would think the mouse would be most intelligent but who would be the least?

Following Fiona's great idea above, I was talking to @digitalmaverick on Twitter and he said that he had used Top Trumps with his children to get to know them better and for them to work together and get to know each other. I took this idea and made an example of what could be done. I have put height, shoe size, door number and hand span as the categories but you could have number of pets, how many pencils in the pencil case, how many jumps in a minute...anything that can be measured with a number.
What would be nice would be to do the same activity every term and look for differences over the school year.
