Dr. Who Maths Resources

The Possibility of Time Travel.

This interesting video looks at Dr Who and the Tardis and whether it might be possible for us to travel through time. Apparently there is plenty of evidence of time travel, take a look at this link for proof:http://io9.com/all-the-evidence-that-time-travel-is-happening-all-arou-1446262029

Below are some maths resources linked with space.

Dr Where: Symmetry and Probability.

This vintage BBC clip (sorry for the picture and sound quality) follows the mystery of 2 people that go missing. Dr Where (do you see what they have done there?) is called to try and find out what has happened. Dr Where uses the power of maths to try and solve the problem. The video below and again I apologise for its quality looks at probability and is the better of the two.

Nets are patterns that you can cut out and fold to make shapes, these brilliant Dr Who nets not only make shapes but Dr Who characters.
Using these nets you could look at 2D shape, what shapes are being used in each net? How many right angles are in the net? Can you find any symmetrical shapes?
When made look at the structure, what 3D shapes can you see? How many faces (sides) does your creation have? How many vertices (corners)?

I love these, they can be used for finger puppets, adding e.g. I have 4 Daleks - how many more do I need to make 6. Subtraction e.g. There are 8 enemies, Dr Who zaps 3, how many are left?

You could also use them with songs:
1 little, 2 little, 3 little Daleks, 4 little, 5 little, 6 little Daleks, 7 little, 8 little, 9 little Daleks ... 10 little Daleks in a row.

There were 10 in the base and the Daleks all said exterminate, exterminate, so they all exterminated and 1 went splat.
There were 9 in the base and the Daleks all said exterminate, exterminate, so they all exterminated and 1 went splat.

etc. etc.

Dr Who Infographics.

This infographic shows how many years each Timelord was alive for.
Which Timelord lasted the longest time?
Which Timelord was around for the shortest time?
Are there reasons for this?
Can you place the Timelords in order of how many years before they regenerated.
Can you find differences and similarities between the different doctors?

Some stats to celebrate 50 years of Dr Who.
There have been 467 issues of Dr Who magazine at £4.75 each, how much would this be in total?
A subscription costs £45 for 13 issues, how much have all of the Dr Who episodes cost the BBC?

The information on this pdf could easily be used to make Dr Who Adversary Top Trump crads.
The creatures could be put in order according to Dr's fought, episodes appeared in and stories involved in.
Behind the sofa rating shows how scary each monster was, could you use pictures to depict another feature of the creature?
e.g. brains to show intelligence
Swords to show danger rating.

What differences are there between the first Doctor and the last Doctor?
The infographic shows David Tennant, Tom Baker then Matt Smith as the most popular doctors, who are the most popular in your class. Create a survey of the Doctors and create a bar chart with the results.

I love these blueprints and each has measurements so you could try to make you own version of them (K9 at least) The first K9 pdf is a complete plan with templates to make your own. I am not sure what to do with the Anatomy of the Dale but I love it and had to include it.

Dr Who Infographics Part 2.

This infographic shows how long each Dr. was in the Tardis for. Can you convert this to months? days? minutes? seconds? Place the Dr's. in order of how long they had been in the Tardis.

This infographic is huge!!! it needs downloading and printing off, you could give different areas of it to different groups of children who could analyse the data and report back to the class with their findings.
