The Roman Numeral Shed.

Using Roman Numerals is featured in the new curriculum, great for introducing algebra skills and can be great fun for kids. Here are some videos and resources to help deliver Roman Numerals in the classroom.
These two videos are an excellent introduction to Roman Numerals, looking at how and why they were created.

Indiana Jones: Roman Numerals

This is a great prompt for looking at numerals, thanks to John Cotter (@johndcotter) on Twitter.
Play the video, you may want to pause at 33 seconds and ask your pupils what Roman Numerals they can see.
Then again at 36 seconds as they look at the window: Ask pupils what they notice (hopefully that the numerals in the book are the same as on the window)
Stop again at 1 minute 23 seconds and ask the children what the significance of the numerals is and what Dr. Jones may be thinking. Any predictions as to where the 10 may be?

Again inspiration from John Cotter, hide Roman Numerals in the class and ask children to try and find them, as if they are in the film.

I have added the resources to do this below, it might be a good idea to blow them up to A3 size..if the budget will allow.

Roman Numerals in Sport.

Despite being an ancient form of numbers, Roman Numerals can still be found today. Popular culture such as sport and films uses them in a variety of ways.

Roman Numerals and American Football.

Picture
Please click the picture above to see all logos. The Super Bowl uses Roman Numerals to show what number of Final they are on.
Pick a logo at random and ask pupils to convert from Roman Numerals to numerals.
Can you design the logo for the final in 10 years time?
Can you design the logo for the final in 100 years time?
How about 1000 years (Use your imagination and make it futuristic)
Picture
Apparently the first American Football scoreboard featured Roman Numerals, can you work out the figures above?

Wrestlemania Roman Numerals.

Picture
Again if you click the image above you will see all of the logos. Pick a logo at random and ask pupils to convert from Roman Numerals to numerals.
Can you design the logo for the final in 10 years time?
Can you design the logo for the final in 100 years time?
How about 1000 years (Use your imagination and make it futuristic)

Not all of these logos use Roman Numerals, the ones that do not can you recreate them using Roman Numerals.

Roman Numerals in Film and TV.

There is a scene in Brave where there are Roman Numerals hidden above the door.
What number is hidden?
What might it mean?
